Last day

Off before 8 from Rochefort and an easy drive up through the  Vendée marshes to our breakfast stop in Ste Hermine in the shadow of the huge Clemenceau memorial. We go there regularly.
We did see stork and herons so not a totally boring trip.

Then more fast roads up to Nantes and across the Loire into Brittany. Dull stuff I’m afraid but we had a lot of km to cover today.

Eventually we stopped to eat our sandwiches just north of St Brieuc at a beach I spotted on the map not far off the main road. La Plage des Rosaires. Genteel small resort on a mile long bay of sand and shallow water at the foot of a wooded hillside. Villas and Residences and cafés and a seafront walk.

And..,well! Adam tells me it was a Bachelorette Party.

Never heard of such a thing. But they were all in pink costumes with a name (the bride to be I am informed) on their tee shirts, dancing and whooping to Barbie Girl music.

Surcouf tonight though I am not a bit hungry. Definitely a régime when we get back!
We sail tomorrow morning and should be back in Cheldon sometime in the afternoon.

Rochefort

We left Condom in warm sunshine and headed north hunting for breakfast stop. It took a while… we had hopes of Barbaste, a village famous for its idyllic Henri IV fortified mill. After our tour of its environs and taking many snaps, we headed up into the centre. No boulangerie although once there had been two. No bar either. Harrumph.

So onwards to Casteljaloux where there were boulangeries and bars various and we sat on the terrace of the Grand Café enjoying sun, coffee and croissants for quite a while. But you know you can’t hang around for ever so on we plodded. The verges have been a profusion of wild flowers, especially poppies, throughout our journey. So many wild flowers.

Anyway not much to report. Oh well except for nearly being crashed into by a car that was being flagged down by two gendarmes near Cadillac. The young officer was almost run down as the car swerved past him onto our side!

We eventually stopped on the Gironde at Port Maubert again and ate our sandwiches listening to the rustling poplars and reeds interspersed with the throbbing engine of a spraying helicopter! I assume they were spraying against mosquitos because the whole area is a nature reserve so couldn’t be herbicides or anything noxious to fish or birds.

Ibis Rochefort is good. The biggest beds so far and certainly the best shower and general spaciousness. They even supplied a kettle and tea which we have never had before in Ibis. Kyriad and Campanile, yes but not Ibis. Progress! And we found a new crêperie literally metres down the road. Really good. And a lightning dash to the Arsenal where Hermione is based…alas it’s being refitted in Bayonne at the moment!

Adam has come up with a corker of a nerdy activity! He counting all the roundabouts we go through!! Here are the snails yet again.

Slowly heading north

We left Sète very slowly this morning after a really lovely afternoon and evening in our slightly out of town hotel on the Corniche. Nothing special but nicely appointed and charming young owners. We had a mini supper in the best restaurant around - just soupe de poissons x 2, oysters(12) for Adrian and super desserts.Washed down  by a bottle of Picpoul.

This morning there was a small market of mostly fruit and veg sellers in front of the hotel. Gorgeous fresh picked stuff.

We drove along to Marseillan for breakfast and spent a good hour there so it was nearly 10 by the time we actually set off on the day’s journey north west.

After Béziers and Minervois with a brief stop at roadside caff  near Bize to get two bottles of Muscat de St Jean, we hit our favourite roads under Toulouse where the countryside is rolling slopes of cereal crops, sunflowers, lavender etc with a backdrop of the distant Pyrenees, still snowcapped. Sandwiches in the shadow of a church in the village of Puydaniel.

Final stop before Condom was Auch - a truly grand town. The cathedral is pretty special but so are many of the other edifices in the historic centre.

And so to Condom again. This time a different hotel because they had a three bed room. It has a balcony with table and chairs overlooking a pool. Guess who didn’t bother to pack a swimming costume! But the hotel is a strange place - bit old fashioned, run by middle aged couple who are nice, but…sheets and blankets! aircon not working and it’s hot so we are sleeping with the balcony door open hoping mosquitoes don’t fly  in.
