City break

To Avignon now the summer is over! We are determined to give it a fair go.
We parked as usual free on the other side - Berlingo is just above the prow of this speeding unladen barge!

Today was pretty good - we discovered a hitherto unvisited bit above the river that you can get to without having to go via the Palais des Pâpes. There's a hidden stairway up a turret in the ramparts by the Pont. A bit like the rabbit hole in reverse - you climb up the spirals and pop out at the top with this fantasic view.

And there you are in one of those 19th century pleasure parks beloved of the French with rocky grottoes and grassy lawns, plus statues to the great. This one was apparently a philanthropic work scheme for the unemployed - bit like today's carwashes! (A Joke for Adam...).

Here we have the human sundial! One stands on the date with back to the sun and the time is revealed. There's a conversion table to take account of the season and it was spot on.

All in all the town was bustling but not tourist-thronged . It was a pleasure to stroll about and be able to look at things and the very tempting shops. Not the tempting prices though. We had plat du jour at the market brasserie Le Bateau Ivre again, and even sat outside. No one else did! Really good and friendly service too.

On the way back to the car I spotted the Google Street View vehicle, so look out for us in three months time. Adrian is in a bright yellow shirt and we were walking past the cruise boats at the time.
